In this assignment, you'll explore the concepts of cause and effect in storytelling through the lens of the WOARO framework. By focusing on either the events leading up to a pivotal moment (cause) or the consequences that follow (effect), you'll create a compelling narrative that showcases your understanding of how character actions and reactions drive a story forward.
Assignment Details
Objective
Write a short screenplay (3-5 pages) that focuses on either the cause or effect of a central event, without explicitly showing the event itself. The central event must occur either before your story begins or after it ends. Use the WOARO elements to guide your storytelling, and set your story in one of the three given locations.
The Location Challenge
Set your story in one of the following locations:
- An abandoned lighthouse
- A bustling train station
- A serene city garden
Formatting and Submission Guidelines
- Length: 3-5 pages of script, plus a properly formatted title page
- Format: Adhere to basic screenplay format as taught in class
- File Type: Submit as a PDF file
- Submission Method: Upload your PDF to me on Discord
- Due Date: Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at midnight (Saskatchewan time)
Grading Criteria (10% of final grade)
We're looking for:
- Creative Storytelling and Structure (30%)
- Innovative and imaginative approach to the cause/effect narrative
- Clear story structure following the WOARO elements
- Engaging characters and dialogue that drive the story forward
- Unique and meaningful use of the chosen location
- A clear sense of outcome for the protagonist
- Formatting and White Space (20%)
- Correct application of taught formatting elements
- Appropriate use of white space for readability
- Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation (20%)
- Error-free writing
- Proper use of punctuation in both action lines and dialogue
- Descriptions and Character Introductions (20%)
- Vivid, concise action descriptions
- Clear and impactful character introductions
- Adherence to assignment guidelines (10%)
- Meeting the required 3-5 pages, plus title page
- Effective exploration of either the cause or effect of a central event that doesn't occur within the story itself
- The chosen location plays a meaningful role in the narrative
Important Notes
- The central event must not be shown within your screenplay. It should occur either before your story begins (if focusing on the effect) or after your story ends (if focusing on the cause).
- Focus on the causes that lead up to the central event or the effects that follow, using character actions and reactions to guide the narrative.
- Use the WOARO framework to develop your characters' journeys, ensuring that their wants, actions, and responses are integral to the story's cause or effect structure.
- Be creative in your use of the chosen location, allowing it to play a meaningful role in your narrative.
